Sweet Potato Casserole

This classic sweet potato casserole is a perfect side dish for any holiday meal. It features a creamy sweet potato base topped with a delicious pecan and brown sugar streusel.

  • 4 large sweet potatoes
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp salt
Topping
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/4 tsp salt

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  2. Bake sweet potatoes until tender (about 45-60 minutes), then peel and mash them in a large bowl.
  3. In a bowl, combine melted butter, milk, brown sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, and salt with the mashed sweet potatoes. Mix until smooth.
  4. For the topping, combine flour, brown sugar, melted butter, pecans, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and salt in a separate bowl.
  5. Spread sweet potato mixture into the prepared baking dish and sprinkle the topping evenly over the sweet potatoes. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the casserole is bubbly.

Notes

For extra flavor, add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the sweet potato mixture. You can also toast the pecans before adding them to the topping for a deeper nutty flavor.
