Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
- Prepare the potatoes by peeling and thinly slicing them to an even thickness.
Make the Sauce
- Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat, then whisk in flour and cook for one minute to create a roux.
- Gradually add warm milk, whisking constantly until the sauce thickens; season with salt and pepper.
Assemble and Bake
- Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish, then pour half of the sauce over them and sprinkle with half of the shredded cheese.
- Repeat layers with remaining potatoes, sauce, and cheese, then cover the dish with foil.
- Bake for 30 minutes, then remove foil and bake for another 30 minutes until potatoes are tender and golden brown.
- Let the scalloped potatoes rest for 10 minutes before serving, and garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
Notes
For extra flavor, you can add a pinch of nutmeg to the sauce. Ensure potatoes are sliced evenly for consistent cooking.
