Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup cold butter cut into small pieces
  • 3/4 cup milk

Equipment

  • large bowl
  • whisk
  • pastry blender or fingertips
  • baking sheet
  • round cutter

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C) and lightly grease a baking sheet.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
  3. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Mixing and Baking
  1. Gradually add the milk, mixing until a soft dough forms. Avoid overmixing.
  2. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently pat or roll it to about 1-inch thickness.
  3. Cut out biscuits using a round cutter, then place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  4. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown. Serve warm.

Notes

For extra flaky biscuits, make sure your butter is very cold. Do not twist the biscuit cutter when cutting; push straight down to ensure an even rise.
