Ingredients

Oatmeal Sprouts
  • 1 cup Organic oat groats (not rolled oats)
  • 4 cups Filtered water

Equipment

  • Colander
  • Quart-sized jar
  • Breathable mesh lid or cheesecloth
  • Rubber band
  • Bowl or dish rack
  • Airtight container

Method

Preparation
  1. Rinse the oat groats thoroughly under cool running water using a colander to remove any dirt or debris.
  2. Place the rinsed oat groats in a clean quart-sized jar and add about 2-3 cups of filtered water, ensuring the groats are fully submerged.
Soaking
  1. Cover the jar with a breathable mesh lid or cheesecloth secured with a rubber band, and let the oat groats soak at room temperature for 8-12 hours or overnight.
Rinsing and Draining
  1. After soaking, drain the water completely from the jar, then rinse the oat groats with fresh cool water and drain again.
  2. Invert the jar and prop it at an angle in a bowl or dish rack to allow excess water to drain and air to circulate.
Sprouting
  1. Repeat the rinsing and draining process every 8-12 hours for 5-7 days, or until the sprouts are about 1/2 to 1 inch long.
Harvesting and Storage
  1. Once the sprouts reach the desired length, give them a final rinse and drain them thoroughly.
  2. Store the harvested oatmeal sprouts in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5-7 days.

Notes

Ensure you are using oat groats, not rolled oats, as rolled oats have been processed and will not sprout. Always use filtered water to avoid introducing impurities. Adjust sprouting time based on desired sprout length; longer sprouts will have a slightly more intense flavor. Enjoy your fresh, homegrown oatmeal sprouts in salads, sandwiches, or smoothies!
