Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 2 lbs green beans, trimmed
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • 0.5 cup milk
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 1.3 cups french fried onions
Optional Add-ins
  • 0.5 cup shredded cheddar cheese for extra flavor
  • 0.25 cup cooked bacon, crumbled for a smoky touch

Equipment

  • baking dish (13x9 inch)
  • large bowl
  • steamer or large pot

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and prepare a 13x9 inch baking dish for the casserole. Steam or boil the fresh green beans until they are tender-crisp, then drain any excess water thoroughly.
Assembly
  1. In a large bowl, mix the cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, and black pepper until well combined. Stir in the cooked green beans and half of the crispy fried onions into the creamy mixture.
  2. Pour the green bean mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread it evenly. If desired, sprinkle with shredded cheddar cheese or crumbled bacon at this stage.
Baking
  1. Bake the casserole for 20-25 minutes, or until it is bubbly and heated through thoroughly. Remove the casserole from the oven and sprinkle the remaining french fried onions evenly over the top of the dish.
  2. Return the casserole to the oven and bake for an additional 5 minutes, or until the fried onions are golden brown and crispy. Let the casserole stand for a few minutes before serving to allow it to set.

Notes

For a richer flavor, consider using homemade cream of mushroom soup. You can also experiment with different types of crispy toppings, like crushed crackers or breadcrumbs, for varying textures.
