Preparation
- Wash and thoroughly dry the apples, then remove the stems and insert wooden skewers into the core of each apple.
Making the Candy Coating
- In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar, corn syrup, and water, then cook over medium-high heat until the sugar dissolves.
- Continue cooking without stirring until the mixture reaches 300-310°F (149-154°C) on a candy thermometer, then remove from heat and stir in the food coloring and vanilla extract.
Coating and Cooling
- Carefully dip each apple into the hot candy mixture, turning to coat evenly, and allow any excess to drip off.
- Place the coated apples on a parchment-lined baking sheet and let them cool completely until the candy shell hardens.
Notes
For best results, make sure your apples are very dry before dipping. You can also add a variety of toppings like sprinkles or chopped nuts after dipping and before the candy hardens completely.
